How can Tennis Players prevent common injuries?

Answered by: Colin McAlpin (Head Pro)

Pace yourself early in the season by not playing too much, too soon. Some injuries may be related to your techniques. For example, tennis elbow is often caused by holding the grip too firmly or having the wrong grip which strains the body needlessly. Warm up and cool down properly so you look after your body.

You should always Warm-up prior to playing! A proper warm up features dynamic movements, that starts to raise your body temperature, increases blood flow to your muscles, and improves joint mobility, which significantly reduces the risk of injury. For example, make sure you “shadow swing” before hitting any serves. This protects the rotator cuff in the shoulder. Afterwards, use static stretching where you hold a position. For example, a hamstring or quad stretch will take out stiffness in the legs after playing. And, if you need help, a good physio can get you back in action.
